Century on Bonne Esperance

A Century on Bonne Esperance Book

This is the saga of the Whiteley family, from William H. “Bossy” Whiteley III, who invented the cod trap, his previous family origins to his descendants, a family which spent almost 100 years on Quebec’s Lower North Shore. This is early history of Canada, Newfoundland and Quebec that should be remembered.
This book includes many remarkable historic photographs, maps and drawings showing life, work and people of this important time in the history of Quebec and Newfoundland.
The author’s research into the early history of the Bonne Espérance-St. Paul River areas with collaboration of Laval University’s project “Ethnographic de la Côte-Nord du Saint Laurent” have added information, particularly in regard to developments in the post-war period.
The author also thanks the Pine Hill Archives in Halifax, the International Grenfell Association, Newfoundland Historical Society and Dr. E. P. Weeks, first chairman of the Canadian Saltfish Corporation for useful information.

About the author: Albert S. Whiteley was an Ottawa researcher, writer and de facto historian of the Whiteley family.
